syoin kajii

This kind of work is so difficult to make. With photography -in particular- it is assumed that you can just train the lens at the majestic natural environment and 'nature' will take care of the rest. I think that landscapes are one of the hardest things to do well. What makes a landscape beautiful is being there amongst its mutability, its smells, the wind as blind witness to form, the sound of a silence in between your breath when you're aware of the body in all that space. Obviously something intangible needs to be delivered or taken from the landscape other than the visual. A primordial memory of a place you've never been. Though I digress as these are more portraits of the here and nowness of the world. Syion Kajii is also a zen monk. Could of helped or he just got a very cold head standing in the ocean for hours at a time. Those zen buddhists love that self inflicted, self negation, like the catholics but with out the fun.
