Day of the Dead (Dia de los muertos) is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a time to remember deceased loved ones and honor them. Day of the Dead is a festive and colorful occasion; a time to celebrate life!

The belief behind Day of the Dead practices is that spirits return to the Earth for one day of the year to be with their families. The spirits are greeted with offerings of food and things that the person enjoyed in life. These are laid out on altars in the family home. It is believed that the spirits consume the essence and the aroma of the foods that are offered.

The exhibition this year includes over 40 artists who have created original acrylic. oil and watercolor paintings, assemblage, paper mache, etching, sculpture, mosaic, printmaking and mixed media works on canvas and wood.

The reception for our 6th Annual Dia de los muertos exhibit and celebration coincides with our area's artwalk. NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is a self-guided tour of the galleries, non-profits and artist run project spaces located in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA). We are dedicated to increase the visibility of the thriving arts community in the area.

Sexy Muppets

Animal Inspired sexy girl (from the Girls Drawin Girls blog theme, "Sexy Muppets")

Damon said my Animal girl didn't look like a muppet (she was inspired by, please), so I made a cross-dressing sexy Kermit just for him.

Who Watches the Watchmen?

Caught an amazing show of Burlesque Babes from Outer Space and saw Iza La Vamp's amazing cross-gender routine as The Comedian from the Watchmen. And yes, her pasties were yellow smily faces with red tassels.  HOT!

Sex Bob-Omb

so, my husband and I went to go see Scott Pilgrim the other night. It was... ok. I seriously don't get all the hoopla about why it's so amazing; I thought Scott was a bit of a schmuck, and honestly, Ramona was too good for him. I'd be curious to see why everybody else likes it; it wasn't bad, I just don't understand all the fuss. I read the first book and really couldn't get into it. I wish it was more about the relationship between Scott and Ramona and not fight sequence after fight sequence. Plus, Scott being a schmuck and dating a. a high schooler and b. sorta cheating on her REALLY bugged me. (shrug)

The best performance / actress I dug was the hot redhead Kim Pine.
I thought she'd make a cute surly pin-up with those drumsticks.

Also, check out the rad animated video my friend Allison Craig directed over at Titmouse featuring Kim and Scott in their high school days. Congrats Allison! : D

AMOS Showtime

I saw over on my friend Eliza's blog that she had done this amazing piece for a group show being organized by the German musician, Amos, and dropped them an email asking if they were still looking for artists.

Here's a link to the project

I was -just- under the deadline- they shipped me a blank album cover, and I got to create a design for it! I sent it off today; a day late, but then again, I just got the cover on Saturday!

It was a pretty fun project- the album covers will tour around different galleries across Europe and be available for sale in person and online.

I'll definitely post more details once they receive it and post it on their site! : D

TOMORROW NIGHT! Girls Drawin Girls Sugar & Spice Show

Please join me this Friday evening as I premiere three new pin-up pieces in my first book collection with Girls Drawin Girls!

Girls Drawin Girls presents "Sugar & Spice: Volume III Premiere"

On View: Friday, July 9th - 31st
Location: Gallery 839
1105 N. Hollywood Way
Burbank, CA 91505

"Girls Drawin' Girls" presents "Sugar & Spice,” an art show celebrating the release of their third volume of collected pin-up art titled “Girls Drawin Girls: Sugar & Spice, Volume III.”

The evening will feature original pin-up artwork on display and for sale, burlesque performances by the ladies of Victory Variety Hour, figure drawing models provided by Gallery Girls, and tunes by DJ Marlowe. Refreshments will be provided. A $5 donation is requested at the door to help go towards the evenings' performers.

Artwork on display will feature pin-up pieces from Volume III, as well as original artwork by some of the most talented ladies working in animation, film and graphic design today!

In addition to copies of “Girls Drawin Girls: Sugar & Spice, Vol III” being sold, Girls Drawin Girls will be selling their past books, "Girls Drawin Girls; A Girl in Time, Vol I" and "Once Upon a Girl, Vol II," art prints and other pin-up themed merchandise.

About Girls Drawin Girls:
Girls Drawin Girls was founded in 2006 by Simpsons veteran Melody Severns and storyboard artist Anne Walker as a way to showcase women artists working in the male-dominated industry of animation. Together, they felt it was time for these talented women to demonstrate their creative abilities and artistic interpretations of female sexuality by re-defining the art of the pin-up.

Since its conception, the group has published three volumes of pin-up art and grown to over 90 active members who work professionally in various entertainment industries.

The group provides collaborative projects for its artists (such as book collections, group art shows, and opportunities to participate in charity art events such as the Pasadena Chalk Festival), in addition to promoting each member's individual artistic endeavors through cross-promotion and marketing prints, original artwork and other art-related merchandise.

About Gallery 839:
Gallery 839 is overseen by The Animation Guild (TAG 839). Located in the Union’s office headquarters building, Gallery 839 focuses on the work of artists in the animation industry, highlighting their fine art backgrounds apart from their day-to-day jobs in animation.

Gallery 839 hosts monthly shows of TAG members’ personal art, with a gala opening reception the first or second Friday of each month. The main goal for these shows is to help give TAG members a venue to show their personal artistry. The talent of the Animation Guild’s membership runs deep and wide, and the purpose of Gallery 839 is to share that talent with both the membership and the rest of the community.

Day of the Dead PINATA??

So, those of you who managed to purchase the SUPER AWESOME Girls Drawin Girls 2010 Art Calendar will no doubt recognize my lovely pin-up art for the month of October- a Day of the Dead girl. (and YES, i know Dios de los Meurte is Nov 1-2. You'll just have to deal ; )

Well, I had a wonderful admirer of my work purchase the original painting, and ask my permission if he could one day design a pinata based off/inspired by her (to which I responded, "hells yeah!").

My friends, that day is NOW. (although, he says he's not calling this one technically a Pinata. But I like to think it is!)

Front view- love the inclusion of the bird on her head!

Check out those lacy hot pants! CUTE!
